The heart of every commercial and industrial facility is the electric motor. As the workhorse of industry, the electric motor converts electricity into physical work. The safe and reliable operation of electric motors falls back to the components and systems that start and stop them every day – the motor control center (MCC). This seminar will:

• Guide attendees through the various types of MCC’s and starters, both low-and medium-voltage
• Illustrate what testing and maintenance activities should be performed to assure safe and reliable operation using the ANSI/NETA standards for maintenance testing
• Cover field and shop experiences with visual and mechanical inspection, electrical tests, and electrical test values for:
  • Low-voltage motor starters
  • Low-voltage motor control centers
  • Medium-voltage motor starters
  • Medium-voltage motor control centers

The seminar is divided in three parts: basic design characteristics of high voltage circuit breakers, testing circuit breakers, and analysis of test results. I

ntroduction to circuit breaker design and function which provides basic information for better test preparation and test result analysis. The seminar emphasizes the importance of good preparation for all stages of circuit breaker testing.

This seminar will cover different test methods and applications to detect circuit breaker characteristics, particularly breaker timing and motion.

Case studies with different type of circuit breaker designs will be presented for real world application.

This seminar will discuss the theory and application of partial discharge activity related to medium-voltage switchgear and cable assets. Both ultrasonic and transient earth voltage techniques will be discussed in detail together with the principles of nonintrusive detection, location, and continuous monitoring of partial discharge events.

Attendees will receive technical handouts and practical case studies showing how early intervention based on partial discharge detection can prevent asset failure. Partial discharge activity will be simulated and a range of handheld equipment using both ultrasonic and transient earth voltage techniques will be available for hands-on demonstration.
