This paper discusses pitfalls in the engineering process, configuration, and testing of multivendor intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) using a distributed communications assisted breaker failure scheme as an example. Attendees will leave with:

• A better understanding of how to apply IEC 61850 in multivendor applications
• Knowledge of how to configure IEDs
• A comparative analysis of hired-wired versus GOOSE-based schemes

This seminar covers selection of appropriate flame resistant clothing and equipment as determined by use of tables 130.7(c)(9), (10) & (11) in NFPA 70-2009 and/or the information provided by an arc-flash hazard analysis per 130.3 of NFPA 70E - 2009. Upon completion of this seminar, attendees should be able to:

• Determine the hazard/risk category based on the task
• Ensure that the PPE and equipment is adequate
• Select the PPE and equipment based on the hazard/risk category

Anyone who has been in the workforce for any length of time has pretty much been exposed to the ‘latest and greatest best thing ever’ that will solve all of our problems at work and make life wonderful (only to have it replaced with something else six months later). And when it comes to promoting many of these “programs of the day,” those of us involved in improving performance have oftentimes been GUILTY.

So, what’s the answer? More observations? More training? More threats (aka “corrective action”)?

The answer lies in an entirely new approach - an approach that takes advantage of the inherent characteristics of human beings and the natural forces of nature. The answer lies in this formula: PA*PL*VC = VA. This presentation will detail the components of this formula and how each element multiplies upon the other to affect a whole new attitude toward individual and organizational performance on behalf of workforce members (at all levels).
