Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Worker

WHAT IS THE QUALIFIED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR AND WORKER PROGRAM?

NETA launched the new Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Contractor and Worker Program on February 25, 2024.

Through the establishment of its new Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Contractor and Worker Program, NETA has taken a leadership position in support of the NFPA 70B maintenance requirements.

This new qualification program is in response to the recently ANSI-approved NFPA 70B Standard, making proper electrical equipment maintenance mandatory and enforceable. The new program is intended to meet the anticipated demand for vetted, qualified electrical equipment maintenance contractors and workers. The vetting process includes a contractor company review and the testing of the contractor’s electrical maintenance workers.

NETA will award all vetted, qualified contractor companies with the designation – Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Contractor (QEMC).

NETA will award vetted, contractor-employed electrical maintenance workers havoing passed an exam with the designation – Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Worker (QEMW).

WHY BECOME A QUALIFIED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE CONTRACTOR (QEMC)?

Facility owners and operators are aligning their electrical maintenance programs with the NFPA 70B Standard requiring that maintenance be performed by "qualified electrical workers." Hiring decisions will be made based on the owner’s ability to easily verify and be assured of the qualifications of a contractor and its workers.

The new Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Contractor and Worker Program is administered by NETA and provides third-party assurance of a contractor’s and worker's maintenance experience and knowledge.

QEMC REQUIREMENTS

A Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Contractor (QEMC) has submitted a QEMC application and completed a standardized organizational review process, administered by NETA, including:

  • Review of the electrical contractor’s maintenance capabilities
  • Confirmation of a standard-compliant safety program
  • Verification of a routine equipment calibration program
  • Confirmation of electrical equipment maintenance experience and quality service business operations
  • Examination and confirmation of a minimum number of contractor-employed electrical equipment maintenance workers

QEMW REQUIREMENTS

A Qualified Electrical Equipment Maintenance Worker (QEMW) has passed an exam, administered by NETA, verifying their knowledge and expertise in performing routine electrical equipment maintenance services (See the Detailed Content Outline document for details). These routine maintenance services support the advanced, electrical testing services specified in the ANSI/NETA Standards, performed by NETA-Certified testing technicians at NETA-Accredited independent, third-party testing organizations. To be eligible for the QEMW exam you must meet the following prerequisites:

  • 2nd Year Electrical Apprentice
  • Completed NFPA 70E Safety Training
